Respect the learner’s time. Respect the learner’s intelligence. Respect the learner’s autonomy.

My professional career has been all about helping individuals get the information they need to be successful. I aspire to create experiences that lead to meaningful change in people’s day-to-day lives.

Here are the headlines:

Provably outstanding instruction

My first year teaching “Personnel Management,” I earned perfect student evaluation scores, putting me in the 99th percentile of instructors across the University of Illinois. I’ve placed on the “Instructors Rated as Excellent” list for the iSchool every year.

Expert knowledge in management

I’ve presented dozens of seminars about effective communication and management for professional groups, libraries, and other organizations. My blog about effective management, www.better-boss.com, garnered thousands of visits per month while active.

Highly Educated

My MBA gives me the tools to work in business. My Master’s of Library & Information Science gives me the understanding for how to effectively organize and present information.

Long history of hard work

I’ve been in the workforce since I was 14 years old. I’ve been a dishwasher, short-order cook, data entry specialist, library employee, library manager, university instructor, and part-time consultant. I know the meaning of hard work.

Self-motivated

During the day, I am the primary caretaker for my two young children. I have been waking up before the rooster crows each morning (literally—there’s a rooster in my neighborhood in Phoenix) to make the time to teach myself the tools and theory of instructional design & eLearning development.

Outside of work, I spend my time enjoying my older child’s sense of humor and marveling at how good-natured my little one is. Carolyn and I often listen to podcasts together to wind down in the evenings. I love to cook, though I don’t find the time to try new recipes as often as I used to. I’m a big fan of the board game Go, and I play an occasional video game. To maintain my credibility as a former librarian, I still do plenty of reading, mostly science fiction.
