Design of Personnel Management
In 2020, I created a semester-long master’s level course for the University of Illinois School of Information Science. I have written up the following documents to outline my process during that time.
Analysis Document
This analysis document is based on discussions with the Program Director and the management curriculum work group she formed in early 2020. It summarizes the needs analysis, learner analysis, and context analysis for what would become the Personnel Management course.
Design Document
This design document provides an overview of the instructional needs we identified based on the analysis. In addition to the learning objectives, it outlines the sequence of instruction and training design plan.
Development Document
This development document describes the plan for producing the instructional materials. In addition to a general overview, it provides a detailed development outline for Week 1 of the course to serve as a template for development of future weeks’ material.
Implementation Document
This implementation document explains decisions about method of delivery, structure of learning, and plans to ensure learners are properly oriented to the course modality. Of some note is the “flipped classroom” approach, whereby learners are expected to review the educational materials prior to the live session and be prepared contribute thoughtfully to discussion.
Evaluation Document
There are robust processes for both formative evaluation and summative evaluation of proposed courses at the iSchool. This document gives a detailed accounting of both.
